The Forum’s education resources aim to provide access to the most up-to-date information and materials to schools for teaching and learning about Ireland’s water quality, water management and protecting this precious resource.

Schools Module, Water quality and pollution

This teachers resource includes 5 lesson plans containing links to Power Point slides for:

Lesson 1: How water quality is assessed, explores ecological status and Q values. Introduces ecological, physio-chemical and hydromorphology water quality monitoring.
Lesson 2: Details organic pollution in rivers and lakes.
Lesson 3: Nutrient pollution, sources and problems in lakes and rivers are discussed.
Lesson 4: Toxics and other types of pollution and their impacts on water quality
Lesson 5: How to report a pollution incident and a role play exercise around the challenges of managing water pollution.

There is a student workbook to support learning and provide for assessment of learning. All these lessons are available in Education Resource.

Schools Module, Freshwater biodiversity and habitats

Teachers resource includes 4 lesson plans containing links to PowerPoint slides for:

Lesson 1: River life and habitats – explores the life in rivers, creates freshwater food chains and identifies river habitats.
Lesson 2: Introduces using invertebrates as water quality indicators, kick sampling, invertebrate identification and citizen science monitoring.
Lesson 3: Is a study of the life cycle of the Atlantic Salmon and discusses the significant decline in populations in Ireland.
Lesson 4: Introduced invasive alien species and their impacts on freshwater habitats.
