Heritage week begins this weekend ending with Water Heritage Day Sunday 25th

Heritage Week starts this weekend

National Heritage Week is an initiative by the Heritage Council that celebrates all things heritage. It brings together communities, families, organisations, cultural institutions, academics and enthusiasts, to build awareness about the value of heritage and support its conservation.

Since the Heritage Council assumed responsibility for National Heritage Week in 2005, it has grown from a small 500 event to about 2,225 events planned for 2024. The Heritage Council is the coordinator of National Heritage Week supported by the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government.

This island-wide event celebrates all aspects of our built, natural and cultural heritage.  Nine days long, it includes Wild Child Day on Wednesday and Water Heritage Day on Sunday. The theme for 2024 is Connections, Routes and Networks to explore ways we are connected to each other through physical or cultural connections.

Water Heritage Day on Sunday 25th August provides an opportunity for everyone to engage with and learn about local waterways, lakes, rivers, beaches and coasts.
