Natural Capital Ireland make recommendations for nature restoration funding

Natural Capital Ireland have published recommendations on how to fund nature restoration.

With the EU Nature Restoration Law adopted by the European Council on 17th June 2024, the Irish Environmental Network and Natural Capital Ireland felt it timely to grapple with the ‘how-tos’ of financing the implementation of Ireland’s National Restoration Plan (NRP), which is being formulated by Ireland’s National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Natural Capital Ireland was commissioned by the Irish Environmental Network (IEN) to deliver a report on high-level recommendations for funding nature restoration in Ireland. To do so they brought a diverse group of subject matter experts from academia, business, environmental NGOs, farming, government departments, and semi-state bodies to workshop high-level recommendations for funding nature restoration.

The workshop discussions are detailed in the final report, and based on those discussions and expert input seven key recommendations in relation to funding nature restoration have been identified.

The seven key recommendations identified for funding nature restoration includes:

  • Invest in an overarching nature restoration plan
  • Rebuild trust
  • Mainstream biodiversity
  • Boost capacity
  • Scale up success
  • Multi-annual funding
  • Blended funding – both public & private
