#ReverseTheRedDay – is a global call to protect endangered species and biodiversity.
The aim of the day is to highlight:
- Over 1 million species is at risk from deforestation, pollution and climate change
- Stronger action is needed for a sustainable future
- Raise awareness and support for conservation.
In Ireland, 85% of the 59 most precious EU habitats are of unfavourable status. We have lost 30% of our semi natural grasslands in the past decade and 90% of our wetlands have been drained in the past 300 years.
- 30% of our 100 bee species are threatened with extinction and over half have undergone substantial declines
- 26% of our 211 bird species are on the Red List
- Over half of Ireland’s plant species have declined in range and abundance
- 21% of breeding and 52% of key wintering bird species have declining trends
- 48 species living in our marine waters are threatened with extinction
Society is entirely dependent on nature for the essential provision of oxygen, clean water, a stable climate and food to recreation and mental and physical wellbeing, as well as the less tangible but equally valuable cultural and spiritual benefits.
There are many laws and regulations around protecting nature, but it is still in decline. So, it comes down to each of us to do our bit, to do what we can. The first step is to do no harm.
- Do not over-consume.
- Reduce pesticide and herbicide use and harmful chemicals where possible.
- Plant native flowers, shrubs and trees as this provides homes and food for our wildlife.
