Case Study: Water Conservation in Ireland

The Water Forum is a stakeholder body with representatives from 16 different sectors and our role is to advise on water policy and implementation.

Today, the Forum has published a case study showing how their advice and policy position on water conservation was developed and it’s impact on policy development.

A survey carried out on behalf of the Forum shows that 74% of respondents support conserving water but they do not know how to do so. Our research shows that for developers to put simple water saving devices such as water saving showerheads, taps and toilets in new homes would only cost about €180 per home.

Water and wastewater provision is expensive – €2.20 per 1000 litres for drinking water and €2.19 per 1000 litres for wastewater (Uisce Éireann data). CSO figures state that the average household uses 357 litres per day, in a week that is a cost to the state of €11 for water and wastewater services and €572 over a year.

The Water Forum welcome the Government’s plan to set up a National Working Group for Water Conservation and will support any initiative that empowers people to conserve and value water more.
