Briefing Note on Public Participation

 

An Fóram Uisce Briefing Note based on commissioned research and review of the literature, that provides recommendations regarding the design and facilitation of effective public engagement in water management in Ireland. Key recommendations include:

  1. Introduce and support public participation processes which incorporate the key principles of effective public engagement: to address inequity and power differences; differences in knowledge and expertise and issues of scale such as national v local.
  2. Evaluate current engagement and water governance against these key principles.
  3. Include the public in decision making around water resource management and planning from the beginning of the process.
  4. Support medium and long-term interdisciplinary research on public engagement.
