Rivers as Ecosystems, a schools-based citizen science campaign is launched

Globe Ireland are inviting teachers to register for a schools-based citizen science campaign to assess the quality of local river/stream ecosystems during 3 weeks from 11th March to 12th April 2024.

This ‘Rivers as Ecosystems’ citizen science campaign is coordinated by the EEU, An Taisce and sponsored by the EPA. The results will be used by the EPA to increase understanding of water quality and river health across Ireland.

Over 3 school weeks teachers and students will visit a local stream/river to assess the health using a water quality kit supplied to your school.

Full teacher support including resources, equipment, and instructions will be provided.

Project timeline:

  • Monday March 11th to Friday April 12th – Visit local stream/river and investigate health.
  • Tuesday, March 19th- Expert Webinar (60min online activity for students)
  • Tuesday April 16th- Student presentations Event (60min)

Registered schools will receive a

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about local river water quality and ecosystem health. Teachers will learn how to run a river assessment activity with pupils. Pupils will be introduced to their local waterbody and learn how to use water quality assessment equipment.  All will get the opportunity to participate in a national citizen-science campaign and contribute your local data to a national database.
