Summary information on report

To support its statutory advisory role in future proofing water resources, the Forum commissioned research in 2022 on the potential impacts of climate change on water quality and water quantity in Ireland. The research is currently ongoing but the researchers presented their early findings in a panel discussion prepared for the SFI National Science Week in November 2022.

Science Week 2022 – Water Forum Panel Discussion on the Potential Impacts of Climate change on water quantity and water quality.

Dr Triona McGrath, Research Lead with the Water Forum discusses the potential impacts for water quality with Dr Michelle McKeown of University College Cork and the impacts on water quantity with Dr Fiachra O’Loughlin from University College Dublin. The researchers highlight the fact that we need much more strategic responses and planning for drought that will be particularly impactful in the east and south and more urgent action is needed to reduce pollutants on land as these are highly susceptible to mobilisation during extreme rainfall events causing pollution in our waterways.
